Project Description: The African Export Import Bank (“Afreximbank”) is a multilateral institution set up as a profit-oriented entity for sovereign and private institutions to cooperate in financing and promotion of trade among African countries and between Africa and the rest of the world. It is headquartered in Cairo and has branches in Harare (Zimbabwe), Abuja (Nigeria), Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) and Nairobi (Kenya). The EIB has granted Afreximbank intermediated loans initially in 2017 for EUR 100m with the aim of financing SME investments, and other eligible investments enhancing export capacity. A second loan for EUR 200m has been approved in 2018 to target climate action operations for at least 25% of the funds. The Envisaged Technical Assistance programme aims at providing support to Afreximbank (“TA Programme”) in the following Sub-Saharan African countries which are members of Afreximbank and at the same time fall within the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACPs) in which the EIB conducts lending and Technical Assistance operations under the Cotonou Agreement.
